Record turnout helps Obama

Caucuses were last night in Colorado. I was location manager for the nine precincts that were caucusing at Martinez Elementary School. I attended my first caucus in 2004. With the same nine precincts caucusing, we had seven caucus-goers...last night we had 180! 25 times the attendees.

Barack Obama was the big winner at my location, winning seven precincts and tying in one of the remaining two. Vote-wise he won 110-70 (61%-39%), not quite as large as his statewide margin, but still a big win (and that includes my vote being miscounted as a Clinton vote - it was hard to focus on my precinct while trying to keep 180 people rolling through the caucus).

A lot has been made of the excitement amongst Democrats and the apathy amongst Republican with regards to their respective candidates. I wanted to see if that held true here, in El Paso County, home of Focus on the Family, the reddest of red counties in Colorado.

According the the Secretary of State, the voter registration numbers in El Paso County are 153,499 Republicans, 68,491 Democrats, as of January 5th - more than 2-1.

Last night, 11,029 Republicans caucused in El Paso County and 7826 Democrats did so.

That gives us just over seven percent of registered Republicans caucusing in El Paso County while eleven percent of registered Democrats doing so.

In a place like El Paso County where a significant number of Democrats are afraid to even mention that they're Democrats, that's an incredibly strong showing for our candidates...especially because my preferred candidate won El Paso County 70-29!
